Spring 1990 Box Set |
http://www.dead.net/spring1990I know some folks won't share the sentiment, but I always like to see Brent-era releases. Call me a child of the 80's (apologies to Joan Baez). However...
I'll be passing on this item. Two hundred bucks seems steep for 6 shows. (The memorabilia has no appeal for me.) If they had thrown in 3/24 and 3/29, they might've had me. My two favorite shows of that tour. Kind of a shame.

Re: Spring 1990 Box Set |
Pretty disappointed here. I am not familiar with most of these shows, so it will be interesting to hear when I "buy" this set...but I am generally not a huge fan of this era. Someone said they thought 68-69 sounded like "pots and pans", well that's exactly what that midi horseshit sounds like to me most of the time. Let's please get a '67 release next!!
Edit- oh and no 3-29-90!? Now that's appalling!

Sounds like one of those Olympic stories where the judges screw an athlete out of a medal...
If you all are sick of this, please feel free to nominate me to pick the next box sets and let dead.net know, I'll make sure the next choice is something good.
I will not be purchasing this...

Re: Spring 1990 Box Set |
certainly a little disappointed with this release. However, 3-22-90 is quite a solid show with one of the best TOOs played after oh say like 1979. Along with many other gems, a long time favorite of mine. I think its good that spring 1990 got its recognition, i do agree with bob in that it was easily some of their best eras for playing. I still wouldve preferred a fall 68 or fall 72 box set.
Another note, this music is so close to the warlocks release, and crimson indigo, I would've preferred to get something else out before spring 90

I am also taking a pass on this one for the same reasons you mention. I can't figure out how you release shows from this tour and not include 3-29 and 3-24. They have re-released shows before (see the Vault Box which only had 1 new show and of course Germany shows from E72) and only one song has been released from 3-29 anyways.
I hoping for a silver lining on this one but it is a slim hope. When they had the Egypt release (Rockin' the Cradle), they linked it to the Road Trips series (1.4). I am now hoping that Dave's Picks Vol. 4 will be 3-29-90. Then i only have spend 30 bucks on the show i would really want the most from that tour!

I should have added that I'm probably also in the minority, just on the 68 side.
Though my current "favorite" period is December of 73. A time that makes you wish that Donna had another child or two.
btw: Recently I dl'ed a 1990 show, 9-20 (my b-day), in order to listen to a dark star that receives high marks. Though surprisingly, I have yet to be in the mood to give it a spin.

December '73 fan myself... often go to sleep to Dark Star>Eyes>Stella Blue from 12/6.
But for some reason, I have really been digging Sept. '90 lately, specifically the DP + RT releases, and the New Year's Eve show as well. And I have been a hardline Keith-era guy forever.
Vince was given some super cheesy keyboard sounds to work with, but man...B.M. CHOSE his. Somehow this makes me give Vince a pass. That and his singing doesn't make me want to jump out a window with quite such urgency.
I'm sure I'm in the minority too though.

Re: Spring 1990 Box Set |
I wonder what percentage of Dead.net shoppers known about Archive.org or are old tape traders. If the percentage is low, I can see why they did this - there is some really good music here and they want to make the GD's whole catalog available in high quality. If the percentage is high, it makes no sense - not many sales.
In either case it is very clear that's only a matter of time before there will be very little left to stream.
Edit: Just had a thought...
Considering that there will be little to stream at some point. It would be really cool if they made all official releases available on-line for a subscription fee. Then we wouldn't have to buy all those CDs or download so much on our computers.

Re: Spring 1990 Box Set |
I haven't been following the commercial releases very closely, but I must have missed a lot if they are even coming close to 2137 (38) commercial releases.
Don't worry but I think streaming dead is OK for now. Plus, the AUDS should remain. Well, unless bobby adopts a kid and has further college expenses, then all bets are off.
For some reason thinking of the end of streaming dead has me recalling the end-of-the-universe scene with Dr Flicker from Annie Hall:
INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE-DAY
Alvy as young boy sits on a sofa with his mother in an old-fashioned, cluttered doctor's office. The doctor stands near the sofa, holding a cigarette and listening.
MOTHER
(To the doctor)
He's been depressed. All off a sudden, he can't do anything.
DOCTOR
(Nodding)
Why are you depressed, Alvy?
MOTHER
(Nudging Alvy)
Tell Dr. Flicker.
(Young Alvy sits, his head down. His mother answers for him) It's something he read.
DOCTOR
(Puffing on his cigarette and nodding)
Something he read, huh?
ALVY
(His head still down)
The universe is expanding.
DOCTOR
The universe is expanding?
ALVY
(Looking up at the doctor)
Well, the universe is everything, and if
it's expanding, someday it will break apart
and that would be the end of everything!
Disgusted, his mother looks at him.
MOTHER
(shouting)
What is that your business?
(she turns back to the doctor)
He stopped doing his homework.
ALVY
What's the point?
MOTHER
(Excited, gesturing with her hands)
What has the universe got to do with it?
You're here in Brooklyn! Brooklyn is not expanding!
DOCTOR
(Heartily, looking down at Alvy)
It won't be expanding for billions of years
yet, Alvy. And we've gotta try to enjoy
ourselves while we're here. Uh?
He laughs.

This is the very first release that I will not purchase. I have every single commercial release since the first album. Enough is enough for me. I am not a big fan of the '90's. I have enough from that period. I guess this old man is petering out and it's left up to you young'uns to continue the support. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of releasing the material but seeing I wouldn't listen I'm out for the first time. It's not the money it's just I've had enough.

I think it is an "interesting" way to approach things ,the one show per run thing . I know DL wanted to do a Spring 90 thing, but I thought it would be issued further away from the E72 box . I thought they would do 2/3 night run like the Warlocks, set . Once again , I was wrong . I really thought it was going to be an early to mid 80's thing .
I'm with you Ice9freak, the memorabilia does nothing for me, except jack up the price . Once again, I winced, and put my money on the table (I even though about the 2 cd set), but I am more excited about the new 71 Dave's Picks that I hope is here soon, than this set .

Totally agree. I saw this entire tour except Canada. Branford show is up there with the all time greats. Good shows, and I can see the attraction, but the whole thing has gotten retarded with the limited release, repeal of board downloads from IA, then the high price for the set which lacks some of the best music. Being a market person, I can say that this is not the way to go if you are looking to sustain long term. Pokaround and get your tunes elsewhere... while you can.

Europe '72 box $450 for 73 discs
Spring '90 box $200 for 18 discs
Either those fake ticket stubs are made of gold or they are using inflation-adjusted pricing based on the year of the shows in the release. If the latter is true, then our friend William Tell will be happy. If a '68 box came out, they would sell it for about 3 bucks a disc!
Tour pass and ticket stubs? Do people really want this stuff? I understand having a book but what do you do with ticket stubs to shows you didn't actually attend? Even for a demographic that includes people who have multiple transfers of the same show or will go see a cover band recreate a show, this seems a little too dorky.
